Meditation I
Whenever we are silent, whenever we are quiet, we can discover our true nature, which is compassion and love. This is always available to everyone. There are no exceptions. There is no time of day or night, no time of life, when we are cut off from spirit. We only need to be silent long enough, and God will come and speak directly to our hearts.God doesn't speak in words, or at least he has never spoken to me that way. I tend to distrust people who say"God told me this, or God told me that." God isn't an Englishman or American, and he doesn't speak English. He speaks to us much more directly. He speaks in the silence, and he speaks directly to us.To try to define exactly how he speaks to us will generally lead to misconceptions. For instance, one can say,"God speaks directly to our hearts." When God speaks to us, he does change our hearts, but it is not true that he speaks directly to our hearts. Many people believe they have an exclusive channel to God. If you follow their religion, their dogma, their beliefs, then you will get into heaven and know God, but if you follow any other plan you will be excluded.God isn't about exclusion. God doesn't care if you are a Christian, or a Buddhist, or even an Atheist. He probably doesn't even care if you are a criminal or a saint. Of course, it is very, very difficult for a criminal to hear God, but if he or she were silent, the voice would come. After listening to God, it would be very, very difficult to intentionally perform a criminal act.God isn't about morality. We act morally if we have been listening to God, but one is not closer to God simply because one acts in a particular way. It is not about acting, it is about listening. No one who listens to God would intentionally commit murder, or rob someone, or even insult someone. But this is because they have been listening, not directly because of how they acted. If we act with compassion, then it is easier to be silent and to hear God. Morality is a useful meditation technique, but it is not a form of communion with God, and does not in and of itself draw us closer to God.There are degrees of listening. Some people can hear God with little effort. Some atheists hear God quite clearly, though they would never call Her God. They just hear the voice, and act accordingly. There is no need for names. Conversely, some Christians never hear God.Some people can become absolutely silent and God floods into them. Others only get faint hints of what he is like. There is a continuum, from those who live in the darkness, to those who live in the light. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle. But we should all move towards the light, and we can only see the light clearly when we are silent.
